Akvarium
The Russian group Akvarium (English translation: Aquarium) is led by singer/songwriter/guitarist Boris Grebenshikov, who has issued over 70 albums either on his own or as a member of Akvarium since the '70s. Akvarium has been known to tackle a variety of different musical styles, including ballads, reggae, and even rock. Having issued 20 releases since their formation in 1981, Akvarium's 1991 release The Russian Album is often considered their finest. After touring America during 1997, Akvarium recorded an album with members of the Band (including bassist Rick Danko, organist Garth Hudson, guitarist Jim Weider, and drummer Randy Ciarlante), entitled Lilit (Lilith). Although the lyrics to Akvarium and Grebenshikov songs are in Russian, Grebenshikov issued a pair of English solo releases, 1989's Radio Silence (which featured guest appearances by the Eurythmics' Dave Stewart and Annie Lennox, the Pretenders' Chrissie Hynde, Bananarama's Siobhan Fahey, plus percussionists Ray Cooper and Olle Romo) and 1990's Radio London. By the dawn of the 21st century, Grebenshikov had created the official Akvarium home page (www.aquarium.ru) on his own and put together a CD-ROM titled Ring of Time, which takes the viewer on a guided tour of places and important events throughout Akvarium's history. ~ Greg Prato, Rovi
